Grain and Pulse Inspection in Turkey
Turkey is a leading exporter of wheat flour, pasta, bulgur and processed pulses, and a large grain producer in its own right. Much export trade runs through processing industries that also use imported raw material, so origin, specification and documentation all need checking.
Grains and Pulses we inspect
Each guide covers regions, season, quality parameters, sampling, laboratory testing, risks and the pre-shipment procedure.
Wheat
Turkey is a large wheat producer and one of the world's biggest wheat importers, because its flour and pasta industries export so much.
Wheat Flour
Turkey is regularly the world's largest wheat flour exporter, shipping to Iraq, Yemen, Africa and Asia.
Bulgur
Turkey is the world's leading bulgur producer and exporter.
Barley
Barley is Turkey's second cereal, grown largely on the Central Anatolian plateau for feed and malting.
Corn (Maize)
Turkey grows maize for feed, starch and food use, mainly in the Çukurova plain and the Southeast.
Rice
Turkey produces paddy rice in Thrace and the Black Sea region, mostly medium-grain Baldo and Osmancık types.
Lentils
Turkey is a major red lentil producer and processor.
Chickpeas
Turkey is a large chickpea producer, growing Kabuli-type chickpeas on the Central Anatolian plateau.
Dry Beans
Turkey grows dry white beans in Central and Eastern Anatolia, including several registered geographical indications.
Production across Turkey
Grains and Pulses in this guide come from 26 provinces across 6 geographic regions. We plan inspector travel around the harvest calendar.
Coverage across TurkeyHow we sample and inspect
Sampling follows GAFTA sampling rules, ISO 24333 or the method agreed in the contract. For bagged cargo, bags are sampled with a sampling spear across the lot; for bulk, samples are drawn from the moving stream during loading or from the stack. Samples are sealed in sets for buyer, seller and arbitration where required.
- Agree specification and sampling method, including GAFTA or contract rules
- Verify lot identity, warehouse, bag count or bulk quantity
- Draw and seal representative samples
- Examine physical quality: foreign matter, broken kernels, insects, odour
- Run on-site moisture and test weight where applicable
- Send samples for protein, mycotoxins, residues or functional tests
- Supervise weighing, loading and hold or container condition
- Issue inspection and weight reports
