Potato Inspection in Turkey

Turkey is a large potato producer, with the Central Anatolian plateau supplying most of the main crop. Phytosanitary eligibility is the first question: many importing countries restrict ware potato imports, so access must be confirmed before quality.

05Typical quality parameters

Quality parameters for Potatoes
ParameterWhat is checked
SizeCalibre or weight band
SkinSkin set and finish
Internal qualityHollow heart, internal browning on cut samples
Dry matterWhere specified for processing
DefectsGreening, common scab, cracks, sprouting, soft rot

Limits and tolerances come from your contract and the applicable standard. We do not apply generic values where a contract specification exists.

06Visual inspection criteria

  • Greening
  • Common scab and silver scurf
  • Cut tests for hollow heart
  • Potato tuber moth damage

07Sampling methods

Packages are drawn at random from each lot according to the contract or the OECD conformity check method, opened and examined for class, colour stage, sizing and defects. For bulk products such as onions or potatoes, sacks are sampled across the lot and a minimum sample weight is examined.

08Laboratory testing

  • Pesticide residues including sprout suppressants
  • Testing for regulated pests where required
  • Multi-residue pesticide screening (LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS)
  • Nitrate content for leafy vegetables where relevant
  • Brix for cherry and specialty tomatoes

Testing is coordinated through laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for the required method. See laboratory coordination.

09Food safety and quality risks

  • Quarantine pests and diseases
  • Storage rots
  • Export policy changes

10Packaging and labelling

Jute or mesh sacks of 25 to 50 kg; big bags for processors.

11Storage and transportation

Dark, ventilated storage; temperature depends on end use.

12Pre-shipment inspection procedure

  1. Confirm specification, class, colour stage, size and packaging
  2. Verify the lot is packed and labelled, with grower or packhouse traceability codes
  3. Draw random packages and record pulp temperature
  4. Assess defects, colour stage, uniformity and sizing
  5. Check net weight and packaging integrity
  6. Take samples for residue testing where required
  7. Supervise reefer settings, loading and sealing
  8. Issue a same-day photographic report

13Relevant international standards

Regulations are amended regularly. Always check the version in force for your destination market.
