05Typical quality parameters

Quality parameters for Compound Animal Feed
ParameterWhat is checked
Declared nutrientsCrude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, ash, moisture
EnergyCalculated against formulation
Pellet durabilityDurability index and fines
MineralsCalcium, phosphorus, sodium
Undesirable substancesAflatoxin B1, heavy metals, dioxins

Limits and tolerances come from your contract and the applicable standard. We do not apply generic values where a contract specification exists.

06Visual inspection criteria

  • Pellet integrity and fines
  • Mould, caking and odour
  • Insects
  • Bag labels and net weight

07Sampling methods

Bagged feed is sampled across the lot with a sampling spear or by drawing complete bags at random, then reduced to laboratory samples. Bulk feed is sampled from the loading stream. Where the buyer uses EU methods, sampling follows the approach of Regulation (EC) No 152/2009.

08Laboratory testing

  • Proximate analysis
  • Aflatoxin B1, DON, zearalenone, fumonisins
  • Salmonella
  • Heavy metals
  • Medicated feed additives where declared
  • Proximate analysis: moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, ash

Testing is coordinated through laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for the required method. See laboratory coordination.

09Food safety and quality risks

  • Mycotoxins from raw materials
  • Salmonella
  • Cross-contamination with medicated feed
  • Composition not matching labels

10Packaging and labelling

PP bags of 25 to 50 kg, big bags and bulk.

11Storage and transportation

Dry, ventilated, pest-controlled storage.

12Pre-shipment inspection procedure

  1. Review feed specification, declared nutrients and labelling requirements
  2. Confirm lot identity and production records
  3. Draw representative samples and seal them
  4. Examine pellet quality, fines, odour, colour, mould and insects
  5. Send samples for proximate analysis and undesirable substances
  6. Check bag condition, labels and net weight
  7. Supervise loading and container condition
  8. Issue an inspection report

13Relevant international standards

Regulations are amended regularly. Always check the version in force for your destination market.
